Hero's Turbine

Image: Hero's Turbine Prop in action

Hero or Heron of Alexandria described his aeolipile, the first suggestion for a steam engine, about the year 150 AD. This model demonstrates Hero's idea - a simple reaction turbine - under steam. This features in The Fire Show as a demonstration of the conversion of heat energy into mechanical work, but it has many other uses.

My interpretation of Hero’s design is a real steam turbine, fired by two propane/butane torches. The boiler which forms the central spindle of the machine is machined from thick walled steel tube with turned end-plugs welded in to ensure perfect balance. The machine runs on ball bearings for ease of motion. It is supported on a stout welded steel frame with an integral platform for the gas torches. Filled with approx 50 ml of water steam can be raised in under two minutes, and the machine will run for about 5 mins on this quantity of water.
