Fire Tornado

This demonstration is a sure-fire winner with audiences of all ages. I use it in my Fire Show and my Air Show, but it has many other uses. I have supplied several of these to Science Centres and freelance presenters in the UK for use in their own shows.

The Fire Tornado consists of a perforated metal cylinder about 600 mm tall x 280 mm diameter fixed to a heavy turned steel flywheel which is free to spin on ball bearings. A turned aluminum flame-dish is fixed in the bottom of the drum, mounted concentrically with it.

The demonstration works like this: about 5 ml of lighter fluid (naphtha) is placed in the central dish and lit with a gas lighter. Upon spinning the cage at about 30 rpm the perforations set the air within the cylinder spinning. At the same time heat from the burning fuel causes the air to rise, so the sum of the two movements makes the air entrained within the spinning cage rise helically, generating a mini tornado whose shape is made visible by the flames which rise up with it.
