Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out more and make a booking?

I hope that there's plenty of infromation aboput my shows on this website, but if there's anything you'd like to know that's not on the site please feel free to ask me.

Go to the CONTACT ME page to get in touch by phone or e-mail.

What does it cost?

For a full day working in your venue, I charge £350 plus VAT. (£400 plus VAT for London venues within the M25) In a full day I will perform up to four shows, each lasting 45-50 minutes.

For venues within about an hour's travelling from my base near Bath I offer a half day engagement (usually morning till lunchtime) For this I charge £240 plus VAT. If you book me for a half day I will do two shows.

These prices are for one or two day engagements - If you're looking to book me for a longer period CONTACT ME to discuss a fee for the job.

If you’d like me to bring two different shows on the same day I will do this for no extra charge.

Do you charge extra for travel and accommodation?

No, the fee you pay covers these costs - it seems to me that it is not fair to my customers to charge a separate milage rate or for an overnight stay. If I charge a simple flat fee you know exactly what I will charge up front.

How many people can you cope with at once?

This depends on the venue. In a school hall or similar the practical upper limit on the audience size is about 100 - much bigger than this and the folk at the back are just too far away to see clearly.

In a lecture theatre I can perform to bigger audiences. My largest audience to date has been 600!

If I'm going to perform to large audiences I may ask for your help with extra audio-visual equipment to make sure that everyone gets a good view.

How long do your shows last?

Shows normally last about 45 minutes - but by the time the audience have been rounded up and seated you should allow an hour for each performance. I need a minimum of 15 minutes between shows to reset my demonstrations and recharge my batteries.

How long do you need to set up?

You should allow about an hour for me to unload my van, get my bearings and set up my equipment. Packing up is always quicker - I can usually clear my gear away in half an hour or less. Help in carrying stuff in and out is always appreciated!

We serve lunches in our Hall. Is this a problem?

Not at all! I can pack my props and equipment away well enough to leave your hall clear for lunches in about 15 minutes - sometimes less. Setting up again after lunch takes about the same time.

What are your technical requirements?

I need a space like a school hall, to perform in, some tables (normally to make a surface about 12 ft x 2 ft (3.5 m x 0.6 m) to put my props on, maybe some water, and a 13A socket to plug my equipment into. If you have built-in A-V equipment (data projector and screen) I prefer to use these, but I can provide my own if required.

I bring everything else I need with me.

I also need a place to park my van as close as possible to where I’m performing.

What about insurance and CRB clearance?

I carry adequate public liability insurance through my membership of Equity. Current (October 2012) OFSTED guidance is that I do not need CRB clearence for the work I do in schools as I do not have 'regular or frequent contact' (as defined in relevant law and statutory guidance) with young people.

I can supply risk assessments for all my shows on request.

What if we have to cancel?

If for any reason you have to cancel a booking, please give me as much notice as possible, and at least 24 hours unless the cancellation is caused by a real emergency. If I can't come on the day we originally fixed I'd prefer to rearrange the booking for a subsequent date if at all possible.

If a booking is cancelled at less than 24 hours notice I reserve the right to charge you the full fee for the booking. For cancellations made at longer notice I may ask you meet the cost of items such as deposits on accommodation if I cannot get these back.

What if you have to cancel?

I will only cancel a performance if I am prevented from coming through illness, mechanical breakdown or some other circumstance outwith my control. In the unlikely event that I have to cancel I will give you as much notice as possible, and would hope that we could arrange to reschedule the performance for a later time.

As I will only cancel performances due to circumstances outwith my control I will not accept liability for any financial or other losses arising from the cancellation.
